Groom's Cakes: Wedding Cakes for Guys
HOUSTON (FOX 26) - 'Tis the season of weddings, and that means bakeries across the South are busy not only making wedding cakes but "groom's cakes".
The groom's cake has been a Southern tradition but what's new is the type of cakes bakers are making.
Husband-to-be Christopher Slagel cannot wait to see his love of two years walk down the aisle on Saturday.
The dress his bride Atasha Roper has chosen will be such a surprise, but today he is walking down the aisle, well,
the bakery aisle at Houston's Three Brothers Bakery for a different sort of surprise.
The US Army vet is seeing his groom's cake Atasha designed for him for the very first time.
"The woman has the fancy ring and fancy purse, men get their cake and they're designed to reflect them.
Most men do their own groom's cake, but I knew what I wanted, and I knew it would be very special for him," said Atasha.
The days of a rectangle sheet cake made of strawberries or chocolate are long-gone.
Today's groom's cakes are works of art.
"Since I've been here groom's cakes have kind of gone from butter cream with strawberries more to what you see today more customized,
a look that they're looking for," said baker Bobby Jucker.
Fifth generation baker Bobby Jucker says while a wedding cake is supposed to be very beautiful and traditional, the groom's cake has to
have that "wow" factor.
"A 3D golf bag sitting on top of a fairway, we just did a Texas with a gun on top, towers, stadiums, you name it, guns oh my gosh, a
lot of guns," said Bobby.
Bobby tells me the groom's cake has even become sort of like a competition between the 2 sets of parents.
"The groom's parents really haven't been involved in the wedding and they want to blow everything away so they do these incredible
grooms cakes, sometimes they really outmatch the wedding cake," said Bobby.

Whoever the designer is, be it the bride, the groom or his parents, it's about keeping the groom in mind because let's face it ladies,
the big day is usually all about us.
"I want to shock, I want them to think oh I can't believe she did this, can't believe she came up with it and really look and see all the
details and how it all came together," said Atasha.
"I'm just amazed. We have so much else going on with wedding planning, all family coming into town, so much going on, she would take
the time to make it just for me," said Christopher.
