It is just the middle of May, and it already feels like we have celebrated a full year of food-related holidays here on the blog. But this week’s is particularly special, given that it ties in with our very reason for being: Baking Day! Celebrated this year on May 17, it’s a day to celebrate loved ones by showering them with baked goods. Ideally, these baked goods are ones you make at home for them.

We know baking is a task a lot of people would rather leave to the pros like us, which is totally understandable! Whether for lack of knowledge or time, we get plenty of visits from people who need to outsource their baking to us. But for this one day, we want to empower you to bake for yourself, and have several ideas of how you can take some of our core products and turn them into something new and delicious! (You can always come to us for a cake or a pie to sweeten the deal, too.)

Challah French Toast:

  1. All you need to do is dip each slice of bread into a raw scrambled egg mixture.

  2. Heat your stove top to medium or medium low and let each side cook for about 3-4 min TOPS (if you don’t like your French toast crispy, do each side for 2 min) use a skillet, or pan for this and coat it with butter or non-stick cooking spray.

  3. You can add syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit to the finished product.

Onion Board Pizza:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°

  2. First you will need to get some tomato sauce and spread it all over the onion board (this will act as your pizza crust).

  3. Top it off with some veggies: like bell pepper, olives, spinach, broccoli, or whatever else you can think of.

  4. Then, if you would like, you can also add some meats to the pizza.

  5. After you add meats and veggies, cover the pizza in mozzarella and parmesan cheese.

  6. Let the pizza bake in the oven at 350° for about 15 minutes. Keep in mind, the onion board is already cooked, so you don’t want to leave it in too long or it will get burnt.

* NOTE: We only sell our onion boards on Sundays and keep a limited quantity. Call ahead and reserve yours!

For delicious treat made completely from scratch, we recommend trying your hand at making Kugel, or “Jewish Lasagna.”

  4. In a different bowl, mix the graham cracker crumbs, sugar, and cinnamon.

  5. Pour the cooked noodles (after draining) into the creamed mix with the chopped apricots.

  6. Spray a glass rectangular baking dish with butter flavored non-stick spray and pour the creamed mixture into it.

So get to baking, friends! We hope the process brings you as much joy as it has brought us for over 65 years.
