Hip, hop, hooray! Easter is on the way! Isn’t it funny that bunnies don’t lay eggs? Yet, this iconography of Easter goes way back! When Germans immigrated to America in the 1700s, they brought with them German lore of a hare that laid eggs! The custom of making nests for the rabbit’s eggs spread, and now every year children across the country search for colorful eggs to place in their Easter baskets.
The tradition of decorating eggs goes back to the 13th century and has many different origin stories, though in most all of them, the egg represents new life.
