The season for partying has commenced! Today–Three Kings Day–begins the start to Mardi Gras! If you’re unfamiliar with this festive holiday, allow us to give you a brief primer.

Three Kings Day, or Epiphany, is the Christian feast day that celebrates the Magi’s visit to Jesus. Three Kings Day marks the official “feasting” period of Mardi Gras, leading up to Ash Wednesday (this year, February 26th), when fasting begins.

Mardi Gras (or in some countries, it is known as Carnival) is celebrated dozens of different ways around the world. There are parades, parties, and delicious food throughout the holiday!

King Cake is the main staple of Mardi Gras. It is a sweet pastry covered in icing, sugar, and comes with different fillings such as cream cheese, cinnamon, or fruit. Want to learn more about the history of King Cakes? Check out this article by Eater here!
