Each holiday season, jokes abound poking fun at the fruitcake – the supposedly most unfavored gift so many love to give as a gift. It’s a well-known culinary tradition this time of year that gets a bad rap for it’s long shelf life. Johnny Carson even joked there was actually only one fruitcake in the world, and it was passed from family to family during the holidays, unwanted by all, but impossible to destroy.
But what about the schtollen? Schtollen, the German holiday bread, is often lumped in the same category as fruitcake, but isn’t the target of all those playful puns. So what is schtollen? It’s a traditional German-style sweet bread, made with candied fruits and nuts, and topped with powdered sugar. What’s not to love about that? More of a sweet bread than a cake, schtollen can be sliced and spread with butter or enjoyed plain and simple. Either way, it’s a holiday tradition for our family. So try it this year and I promise your family’s taste buds will thank you.
We wish you a very sweet holiday season!
