The 4th of July is arguably the biggest holiday of the entire summer. It’s about celebrating our country, eating barbeque, and marveling at fireworks. But Independence Day is also, most importantly, about tradition.
There are tons of different traditions we enjoy in Houston for the 4th of July. There’s the Freedom Over Texas fireworks display that happens annually in Eleanor Tinsley Park, or you could join hundreds of others at the Miller Outdoor Theater to listen to the Houston Symphony for a patriotic concert. Plus there are the numerous parades, festivals, fireworks shows, and celebrations all across the city and the surrounding area.
Our team members also have their own traditions. Many partake in gawking at pyrotechnics, while others prefer to stuff themselves to bursting with burgers and hot dogs. Janice recalls a time when her cousin got married in California on the 4th of July weekend – they walked in the Independence Day parade!
Every year at the bakery we begin preparing for July 4th weeks ahead of its arrival. We make plans for what Independence Day themed cookies we will make, and begin taking orders for numerous flag cakes. We start preparing our bestselling summer pies: Apple Pie, Cherry Pie, and our award-winning Key Lime Pie.
But we don’t only offer sweet stuff for the 4th of July. We make downright delicious hamburger and hot dog buns–warm golden brown and slightly toasty. They’re made from our 200 year old challah dough recipe, and you can’t go wrong with a tradition like that!
However you choose to celebrate the 4th of July, whether with fireworks or food (or both!), we hope you remember that freedom is sweet and should never be taken for granted. Happy Independence Day from all of us at Three Brothers Bakery!
