Today is May 8th, 2020 – the 71st anniversary of Three Brothers Bakery. It is also 75 years since the three brothers, Sigmund, Sol and Max, and older sister Janie, were liberated from Nazi concentration camps. You can read our whole history here.
We are rooted in the legacy of survival and now more than ever all small businesses are being tested. What a difference a year can make. Last year on this day:
- I was honored to be a part of a panel discussing disaster recovering hosted by the SBA Houston District and the Texas Department of Emergency Management
- We were honored at the SBA’s Small Business Week luncheon with a State of Texas Proclamation honoring our small business for making it 70 years
- We were given the Small Family-Owned Business of the Year for the SBA’s Houston District
- We were surprised with a presentation by a representative of Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher’s office on stage
- The Regional SBA Administrator, Justin Crossie and the sponsors of the SBA’s National Small Business Week, Visa led by David Simon, visited our bakery and we had our first celebration of our anniversary
- Then we celebrated with our loyal customers, Council Member Martha Castex-Tatum and another representative of Lizzie Fletcher’s office, our first customer, Clyde Cannon and the family
- And we finally unveiled our Texas Treasured Business designation, which we were supposed to do right after Hurricane Harvey
Fast forward 1 year:
- We stand 6 feet apart
- We wear masks to protect others
- We have 71¢ cookies at our Braeswood store today
- We ask those doing well to donate (not tax deductible) $7.10 to our mitzvah funds to help keep our team employed, feed others and allow us to give back with an extra 15% of baked goods donated by us
- We ask those doing well to buy a pie and employ a village
- We work every day, harder than ever, to survive
- And last, but not least, we thank our loyal customers for making sure we made it to 71, and we know with their help and our great team we will be here to celebrate 72 on May 8, 2021
We stand on the shoulders of survivors, and today we remember them as they give us strength. Thank you for 71 years of sweet memories.
